Mission Services of London is pleased to announce the hire of Sarah Davis as Director of Finance and member of the organization’s Senior Management Team. Sarah assumed her new role on Monday, January 15th, 2018.

Reporting to Peter Rozeluk, Executive Director, Sarah is responsible for providing leadership to Mission Services of London’s Finance Team around day to day financial operations. 

Sarah’s past roles include that of Director of Finance & Operations at Community Mental Health Association Elgin, as well as Director of Corporate Services with Family Services Thames Valley. Prior to these roles, Sarah worked as a Financial Analyst with the South West Local Health Integration Network for a number of years.

As a volunteer, Sarah is also Past Board President of Forest Edge Community Club and current Board Member with Family Services Thames Valley. Until recently, she also formed part of the Mission Services of London Board of Directors, lending her expertise and thought leadership to both the Finance Committee and the Governance Committee of the Board.

Mission Services of London’s 23rd Annual Scan Away Hunger™ Campaign Kick-Off: Grocery store race highlights partnerships and caring for the community

Players from the London Lightning basketball team will kick into high gear to race for a good cause. They will compete against three other teams –  Fresh Radio (103.1 FM), the City of London and store partners – to officially kick-off the 23rd Scan Away Hunger™ Campaign on Oct. 30th at Metro on Wellington for a campaign that begins Nov. 1st. 

Teams of four will relay race down the aisles choosing items for a nutritious meal for 10 people. Each team has a budget of $31.10 and a time allowance of three minutes and 11 seconds. The amount of $3.11 represents the cost of providing one meal to a client at Mission Services of London, which serves about 200,000 client meals per year.

The race signifies the start to this vital campaign with a goal of $110,000. Shoppers simply add $3.11 (or multiples thereof) to their bill at participating locations in London. There are 18 stores involved and, for the very first time, two restaurants; the weeks for participation vary by location from November 1st to December 31st.

“This annual fundraiser is a great example of our community coming together to care for its neighbours,” says Peter Rozeluk, Executive Director of Mission Services of London. “We’re thrilled that the London Lightning organization will be contributing 500 ‘buy one get one’ golden tickets placed at random in Scan Away Hunger™ grocery bags for customers who ‘scan away’ at participating locations, while supplies last. It is with deep appreciation that we thank all of the stores, partnerships and donors who support this effort.”

Back to School CampaignReady or not, school is starting September 5th. Stocking up on supplies is an easy thing for some, but not everyone. For about 50 children staying at Rotholme Women’s and Family Shelter, a set of school supplies may be harder to come by as parents focus on housing stability for their families. Each year, Mission Services of London runs a campaign to help fill this gap. 

We have a few backpacks so far, and are appealing to the public for their generosity. Back to School Appeal List:

Rotholme Women’s and Family Shelter at 42 Stanley Street is a safe place with room for up to 20 families—men, women and children—in need of emergency shelter and care. Caseworkers provide counselling and support to help clients transition to more permanent housing, and achieve self-identified goals.

For over 65 years Mission Services of London has served people in the community – both long-time residents and those new to the city – who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness, those who have a mental illness and/or addiction, and those living in poverty. Homelessness is inextricably intertwined with poverty – a complex issue requiring a comprehensive approach.

“We realize that no single organization can fully address poverty, however, each organization can play a positive role. To that end, I am very pleased to announce that effective April 1, 2017 Mission Services of London became an organization that pays, as a minimum, all of its employees a ‘living wage’, says Peter Rozeluk, Executive Director. Our organization has been added to the list of Living Wage Employers in London.
“For London Ontario, a ‘living wage’ is $15.53 per hour currently. As an organization we are working toward consistently applying our values – compassion, hope, integrity, diligence – in all of our relationships, including our employees. We are proud to take this step and be a small piece in the larger strategy of addressing the serious issue of poverty in our community,” says Rozeluk.

THE MEN’S MISSION kitchen is a busy place. Thanks to the hard working staff and several volunteers, they serve approximately 150 people three meals per day plus snacks. That is a lot of food, and a lot of dishes.

We would like to thank three donors for providing dignity to clients through an upgraded kitchen renovation: General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada (GDLS-C), Westminster College Foundation and an anonymous donor. The upgrades included an expanded and reorganized storage room, a sorting table and upright freezers.

We now have the freezer and storage space to accept more donations and to rotate food properly for better efficiency,” said Food Services Manager Debrann pictured second from left with Gordon (Director of Shelters) at left, and Emily and Doug from GDLS-C.

Donations in kind from our community are vital in helping to deliver nutritious meals to our clients; sometimes a meal at the Men’s Mission is the only food a client will have in a day. When food donations arrive, they need somewhere to go that is accessible and follows safe food handling guidelines. Having ample, properly climate-controlled, clean storage space helps extend the shelf-life of our donations, making them stretch further for longer use and less waste.


MM FreezersThe Men’s Mission kitchen is a busy place…believe us. Thanks to hard-working staff and volunteers, they serve approximately 150 people three meals per day. That is a lot of dishes. Providing food is often the first way we connect with clients, which can lead to other services. Even when it does not, it is part of our mission to respond to this basic need – food nutrition is important for everyone.

The kitchen is sometimes like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get in terms of donations. When food donations arrive, they need somewhere to go that is accessble and follows safe food handling guidelines.

We would like to thank the Westminster College Foundation for a grant to purchase new, commercial, upright freezers for the Men’s Mission kitchen.

“This style of freezer is easy to use and easy to clean. We now have the freezer space to accept more donations and to rotate food properly for maximum efficiency,” said our Food Services Manager. 

Because of this upgrade, we are better able to “actively respond to people experiencing need and affirm human dignity.” We are most grateful.

Walk photoAs mid-winter sets in, it’s built-in to our Canadian psyche to speculate how long it will last and how bad it will get. For those of us who have multiple coats, sturdy boots, heat in our homes and food on our tables, we know we’ll get by. For others who have circumstances in their lives preventing them from the basics, they may not be so sure from day to day.

Coldest Night of the Year 2016Londoners can show support by walking outside on February 25th for those who struggle. A winter walk may not be high on your priority list (or on your list at all), however, past walkers enjoyed this experience. It’s a chance to connect with friends and family for some exercise. Participants start and end the walk at Catholic Central High School, coming back to a warm bowl of tasty chili. Click for details. In addition, proceeds raised in London go towards providing clients with safe shelter, nutritious meals, hot showers, counselling and more through the five branches of Mission Services of London. I speak from the heart when I tell you this story of why it matters. I was blessed to have my communications office at a client site for over two years. Given that people come to a shelter in times of crisis, it was rare to see someone in complete distress. There is one image, though, I will never forget – a man standing outside on the walkway with bare feet, snow bank beside him in January. He went inside, and, thanks to the support of the community, we were able to provide socks, other clothing, a warm meal and a bed for the night.

What if it had been me or a loved one? It is a relief knowing that we have services to help those who have nowhere to go or next to nothing. Coldest Night of the Year is a national, winter walk and fundraiser that challenges all of us to stand on our feet, walk forward, and help make a difference in someone’s life.
