Gifts of Securities

You can make a gift of publicly-traded securities, such as stocks, bonds or mutual funds to Mission Services of London or to its Foundation. These gifts can help to fill the vital needs of clients throughout our branches – things like safe shelter, nutritious meals, counselling and linkages to other community supports. Your support through a gift of securities can help men, women and children who are homeless reach a different tomorrow.

Eligible donors receive a charitable tax receipt for the market value of the gifted securities on the day they arrive in Mission Services of London’s or its Foundation’s account. You, as the donor, can use this tax receipt to help reduce the amount of tax payable on your income; if necessary, you can carry the tax receipt forward to any of the following five years.

Any increase in value in the donated securities during the time when you held them will not be subjected to any capital gains tax. This applies to gifts of securities that you make now or to those that are deferred into the future through a provision in your will (see Legacy Giving below for more information on deferred gifts).

To learn more about gifts of securities, Mission Services of London or its Foundation, please contact Mary Brown, Development Officer, at 519-433-2807 ext. 2113.

Legacy Giving

As many Canadians, you likely have donated to your favourite charity in cash, by cheque or by credit card. Those gifts have made a difference in communities throughout Canada; here at Mission Services of London in particular, they have helped to bring hope to neighbours in need in our area – men, women and children who find themselves homeless and in need of a helping hand.

But there are also other ways in which you can have lasting impact in shaping the future of our community. Have you ever thought about legacy giving?

Legacy gifts can be thought of as deferred gifts, or gifts given in the future. They can include a bequest to Mission Services of London Foundation (all legacy gifts to Mission Services of London are processed through its Foundation); this may be done by naming the Foundation as a full or partial beneficiary of your estate in your will. Other common ways to make legacy gifts are:

Naming Mission Services of London Foundation as the  owner  and/or  beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance policy

  • Naming Mission Services of London Foundation as a beneficiary of a gift annuity or remainder trust
  • Naming Mission Services of London Foundation as beneficiary of an RRSP or RRIF
  • Gifting securities to Mission Services of London Foundation through your estate, which helps to reduce taxes in the year of death and allows more of the estate to pass to your beneficiaries
