Mission Services of London celebrates the life of Fred Hagglund

Fred Hagglund’s life was devoted to his family and his community. He died as he had lived, with quiet strength, faith and surrounded by those he loved and who loved him, on Saturday April 30, 2011 at the age of 56.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future”. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Fred has passed from this earth into the presence of Jesus – the One he trusted.

For 20 years, Fred played an integral role in the Mission Services of London family. He began his career at Mission Services of London in 1990 as a Director at Men’s Mission. He was shortly thereafter promoted as Executive Director in 1991. Fred oversaw many milestones for the agency and its five branches during his tenure.

In honouring our friend, we acknowledge that Fred led us, which for Fred, meant the investment of himself in the lives of others. He shared his life both in example and in conversation. We will remember that example, and we will have the encouragement and challenge of his enduring impact on us personally and organizationally. He approached change with enthusiasm as it provided opportunities to enhance services for individuals struggling with poverty and homelessness. Fred also positioned Mission Services of London to be a leader in collaboration and partnership with other social services, and strengthened our relationships with donors, the City of London, other provincial shelter services and the Ministry of Health to meet needs of children, families and adults.

Fred faced life with a loving determination and a trust that was contagious in his tireless commitment to helping the most vulnerable in our community. His capacity for caring was extraordinary and his bravery in the face of a debilitating and hugely unfair illness was never less than inspirational.

Fred was rich in life. It was the kind of wealth where the currency was the love of family, the enjoyment of God’s good earth and a generous spirit, both in the giving and receiving. Fred had one of those laughs where his entire face got involved in the humour or joy of the moment. He gave of himself and as the ancients put it, he “poured himself out”.

He was the loving husband and best friend of Joanne and proud father and amazing dad to Erin, Kathryn, Cindy, Heather and Matthew. A special thank you to all of you who have supported, not only Fred, but all of the family the past two years. You have been a blessing to them and your love and kindness have been so appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations may be made to the Fred Hagglund Youth Bursary at Mission Services of London or to Wellspring, a cancer support center, would be gratefully appreciated.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”. (Romans 15:13)
